Dude, I don't think you've gotten the answer you were looking for, so let me give this a shot.

I won't go into the whole "it's that or die" routine, because the collective postings in these 100 forums is the equivilant of that fact carved for eternity into the side of an Egyptian pyramid. Nonetheless, it is true, as I and everyone else here can attest.

But about the romantic thing, the embarrassment, the fear she'll freak, and so on -- trust me, she won't. At least I really don't think so. I just recently ended a relationship with a great woman. The how's and why's of why it's over are another story, but I can assure you it had nothing to do with the CPAP.

She was the first girl I met after being diagnosed and setup with the rig. I was still getting used to it, still hating it, and still very self-conscious. Your posting exactly expresses the fears I had at the time.

The night we met we were in Vegas. Before heading out that night, I stashed the machine waaaay under the bed, just in case I scored more than a few bucks at the blackjack table. Long story short, I did -- we spent the rest of the weekend, and the rest of the year since together.

By the third night of that weekend, I knew the gig was about to be up. We couldn't stay out all night again. I knew the machine was starting to help me and I NEEDED SOME SLEEP. But I wanted her there. So I braced for the laughs, the horrified expression, or any number of things I had imagined would happen at this moment. And my God, this was someone I barely knew -- there were a million guys in Vegas that weekend who could breath normally, for cripes sake, who weren't crippled with this horrible thing...

She saw it.

She asked what it was.

She thought it was neat.

She tried it on.

She said she was glad that it made me sleep better.

And then we did.

Now, as I said, your mileage may vary. But I can promise you this: The energy, renewed since of wholeness and strength, fitness, sanity, and everything else you will have again after even just six months on CPAP... if the girl you're with now isn't cool about it, you'll be able to go out and find at least ten who are.

Good luck man,
Chris
