I don't know, Saw. You said you have already been traumatized and needed mental health insurance. I find that a main issue with mental health difficulties is an inability to tolerate stress. Having to wear a CPAP is very stressful for many. I have done years of the therapy and self help route in my life for many issues long before sleep apnea. So, by the time I was introduced to CPAP, this was just another new change to assimilate into my life.
I have often heard it said, when the pain gets great enough, we'll do something about it. For me, the inability to stay awake anymore was enough. I didn't want to lose my drivers license and live like a zombie. Oh, and much of our depression is sleep apnea/sleep deprivation related. Since CPAP, I am no longer on antidepressants nor am I filled with suicidal ideations, anymore.
My husband is very accepting of the mask because he prefers it to sleeping on the couch. He also had 5 hernia surgeries and I didn't throw him out on the street *smiles.*
Marriage and/or relationships are a real give and take. My life is important and he knows it. I could die in my sleep.
UPPP is not guaranteed and I am sure many here can tell you that they may have still required the machine. The ultimate answer is a tracheotomy and a cannula and that is not a pretty sight at all. Most of us prefer the machine!
