She s probably right about a slightly increased infection risk: adding heat to any bacterium culture will increase mitosis (cellular division or growth). The other advantage to non-heated humidifiers is that they don't produce rainout (Grrrrr!!). However, I found out first-hand one night when I forgot to turn the heating element of mine on that heated humidifiers provide a lot more moisture; the chamber was still almost full the next morning.
A lot of people use no himidification or cold passover ones. If it works for you, fine, but if you start to get symptoms, you need to swith to the heated varity.
The mask may also be a determinant. Nasal pillows feed air directly into the nostrils and usually need more humidification than nasal masks. Ditto the Nasal Aire and O(oral)PAP devices.
