Sorry to open old wounds, but why do germs have to hitch-hike on water droplets? Individual organisms or whole colonies can easily become airborne in the strong flow within the tube. They don't fly but they sure can float on the air. A small colony could be lighter than a speck of dust. They would't even have to make the whole 6 feet in one flight. The ooze on the inside of your tube would be very hospitable to a community of beasties. I agree that the risk of infection is slight but the probilility of occurance is non-zero. My point in response to the original poster is that the risk is higher in a heated air stream.
