The epidemic pervasiveness of sleep disorders, and their broad-ranging social/economic consequences, makes it (them), in fact exactly the kind of issue for the government to deal with. In fact sleep medicine was given a major impetus by the US government, through the NIH, and the NSF ("The Omnibus Sleep in America Poll, and National Sleep Awareness Day,") to raise awareness and promote the development of diagnostic and treatment facilities. This is a significant public health issue. For an interesting read, viz-a-vis government and health, try Betrayal of Trust, by Laure Garrett; a real "eye-opener," (lol) and only 1000 medium-format pages.
