You are not alone! I had shoulder surgery in June after an accident at work in April. Here, you follow the Workmans Compensation protocol, i.e., you go through physical therapy for 6 wks. and if the cheapest way doesn't fix it, they look further. My shoulder joint was unstable and would slip in and out easily, sometimes just by walking. It felt like touching an electric fence each time the joint popped out or in. Needless to say, I was very inactive pre-surgery and gained 30 pounds.
Post surgery, the physical therapy and resumption of physical activity have managed to rid me of all but 6 pounds of the extra weight. I am still sufficiently overweight that simply reclining in a dentist's chair causes my airway to collapse.
I wear a Medic Alert medallion to alert emergency personnel that I will go into respiratory arrest if they place me on my back without an airway.
