"Aghast" awakenings

Posted by Atlanta_Pete on September 05, 2002 at 08:55:46:

I’ve been on CPAP (Nasal Aire) for a year. I generally wake up naturally. But when my wife awakens me when I have the CPAP on, I am almost always terribly startled. I make a loud gasp of fear on the inhalation as I awaken.

I am wondering if this is a remnant of all the years suffering from apnea—in other words something psychological rather than physiological. It happens consistently, something which I would not expect if it were related to being in REM during the awakening.

Anyone have the same experience? What do you think it is?
