Horrible third sleep test

Posted by lauralee on September 30, 2002 at 05:37:54:

I was sent by my pulmonary doctor for a third test for a titration for a CPAP. I didn't sleep at all. The tech. first put a full face mask on me and I had a panic attack because I have a hard time with air in my mouth. I always feel smothered outside in the in the wind because it feels as if it's taking my breath away and this was a similar feeling. The tech only had three masks, all which too large for my small face and they all leaked air into my eyes or out the sides. The other two were nasal masks that she tied on so tight they put pressure on my forehead and the space under my nose so that it made my front teeth feel loose after the test. She told me the other masks that she had were broken. That these masks were for the tests and that the mask I would get to take home wasn't anything like these. She covered my face almost completely with tape. Then everytime I would start to drift off to sleep she would come running back into the room throwing on the light and ripping off the tape to adjust the sensors so they would work better.
A few days after the test I called the main sleep center and asked about my test. The tech there said since I didn't sleep and didn't do well with a CPAP my doctor would probably try another type of treatment. Now this is the third test and these tests aren't cheap, so why have I done all this only to be told this? Also, the tech when I left was cleaning the masks with a hospital handi-wipe type cloth from a container, aren't they suppose to be disinfected or soaked with vinegar? What she was doing didn't seem very sanitary to me. I go back to the pulmonary Dr. in Oct. for the results. Meanwhile I am still having problems sleeping. This testing has been going on for months. It seems they just want the money. They certainly haven't put any of it back into their business for new masks that will fit the patients.
