If you're still doing it after 3 months (I was) you probably should get a re-titration (another sleep study where they check you're on the right pressure.)
Main reasons for mask removal like that are nasal congestion (which you've accounted for,) leaks (are you sure you're not having any?) and insufficient pressure. Sometimes the body knows more than you do, and is trying to tell you its not getting enough air - particularly if you have felt that way while conscious w/ the nasal mask. It's quite possible you need your pressure raised (although in some cases that makes apnea worse, so don't blindly demand it.)
I would definitely get that referral - see a sleep doctor (preferably pulmonologist, preferably board-certified in sleep medicine) and/or get another titration done.
Also you can use the 'search' function on this site to read other people's experience with this common frustration - I know I had it.
