Epilepsy Discovered by Sleep Test?

Posted by GBoogie on October 19, 2002 at 16:45:13:

Has anybody learned they have epilepsy because they had a sleep test?

I'm just curious what the folks that read the EEG portion of the sleep test are looking for. Are they fully trained to read EEG's or do they just know about the stages of sleep?

Also, does anybody know the causation direction? Does the apnea cause the low blood oxygen which causes the seizure, or does the seizure cause the apnea (either central or obstructive)?

And finally, if you have nocturnal epilepsy and you had 2 sleep tests where they noticed 'severe' apnea, does the fact that they didn't notice nocturnal epilepsy mean you don't have it? I would tend to think that a night of severe apnea would bring out your epilepsy if you had it and it would be noted on your sleep test report, but I may be wrong.
