I think most people are so exhausted, that they seem to sleep very solidly through the night, not remembering anything about their many many wakeful periods. It's after going on CPAP that staying awake is more of a problem.

I had delveloped quite a case of insomnia, and my sleep doc sent me to an insomnia class. I learned that waking up at the end of each sleep cycle is normal, and that stimuli such as anxiety can prevent our sleep drive from functioning as well. When I learned that, I was able to chill, and fall back asleep more easily.
