On the subject of "sleep debt".....

Posted by Sleepless in NJ on November 08, 2002 at 12:05:14:

I have been reading a lot of posts on this board having to do with the subject of sleep debt or paying back sleep debt. I have always understood that if you are sleep deprived and then start getting normal sleep again, your body will compensate by spending more time in REM sleep or deep delta sleep and be able to repair the "damage" in a normal 8 hour sleep period. However, from what I read on this board, this isn't so. I am led to believe by the posts here that one must "pay back" the sleep debt that one has built up over the years by sleeping more than 8 hours a night until you're "paid up". I am inclined to believe that the truth here is somewhere in between the two extremes.

Which is closer to reality here? Any comments?
