I change the filter quite often, as my house is old and doesn't keep out the dust very well, I haven't tried running the machine without it, but I could if I chose to. The machine is only 8 months old, and I could not tell you how many hours it has run. rough guess would be 24000 hours

gosh that sounds like a lot of hours LOL
