Mouthbreathing does not cause apnea. The problem with it s that to use the CPAP, you need to breathe through your nose (except with a full face mask). Therefore, mouthbreathing is one of the problems that people on CPAP therapy struggle with. When people mouthbreathe, or when air escapes through the mouth, the pressure that CPAP delivers is reduced, and it also often wakes people up.
For some people, it's a relativelt simple thing to train themselves not to do. For others, it's a question of what to put over their mouths or under their chins. Few like myself have mouthpieces that help. Do a search at the main page for mouthbreathing, and you'll get a mound of posts on the subject.
