Hi Phil. I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I can relate to the feelings of not wanting to wear CPAP around other people. I'm only 23 and still spend nights at friends houses and like to go camping, etc, so I hate to think of CPAP preventing me from doing those things (I've only been on it for 5 weeks, so it hasn't really been a problem yet but I know these situations will come up...). Luckily, I tried out an oral appliance before I got my CPAP which helps my apnea a lot, just not quite enough for a longterm solution. So what I'm planning on doing in situations where I'm staying at others' houses, etc. is to use the oral appliance. I figure at least it's better than sleeping with nothing and at least for me it's not nearly as embarrassing as CPAP. So you might want to think about exploring that option. I don't know how much it would help with your apnea, but chances are it would be better than nothing for you, too. But on the other hand, I think people will be more understanding than you think they will about the CPAP if you do decide to wear it. Anyway, good luck and I hope it's some comfort to know that we understand what you're going through.
Rebecca
