I think it is the body changing. When on CPAP, you get used to a certain feeling associated with sleep. When you remove the pressure, the breathing just doesn't feel right, and since a body hasn't been exposed to apnea's with the machine, I would imagine an apnea would then appear new and the "feeling" amplified exponentially.
