It's not clear to me why you had to sleep downstairs in the first place. I would think that if it's your normal bed, you would be able to quietly attach the CPAP, and quietly slip into bed.

Perhaps what's at work here is a sleep disorder on your husband's part. If you suspect that this is the case, it's imperative that he be tested.
