So Very Under Diagnosed

Posted by - Sleepy Coote on November 26, 2002 at 19:48:10:

I just visited my primary physician today for a routine check up that was not sleep related. My doctor just so happens to be a fairly young internist who is very progressive in his way of thinking. His family practice is comprised of several internists, one cardiologist, and a chiropractor, for instance! The doctors are well-respected and have even received quite a few professional accolades.

When we happened on the subject of sleep disorders, my doctor said that his practice firmly believes sleep disorders are perhaps the most under diagnosed problems. He said that his practice averages one sleep study referral a day. Now while his large practice is admittedy very busy, I never would have guessed that many sleep study referrals were necessary. What surprised me even more was when he said around 85% of those sleep study referrals comes back positive for a sleep disorder. I was one of those sleep-disorder positives, of course.

Wow do those numbers surprise me!

Oh, how I wish my Dad had such an astute doctor. My family watched my Dad go through the same debilitating symptoms I did. My father got progressively worse over decades, never having had a sleep study. Had we only known back then about sleep disorders what we know now... had we only known!
