I concur with most of what SGS has written. And O.A.K. as well. And although I disagree with a few of your points, I fully understand what you have said.
A few notes to add, primarily observations of prior posts on these forums, and some medical study mentions:
It was reported that there is an approximate 50/50 split between gain/loss in individuals that had a weight change after starting NPAP therapy.
Some think that OSA may be the cause for weight gain, as opposed to weight being the cause of apnea.
Those who had successful weight loss worked at it with proper diet and excercise. It did not go away on it's own.
I have met one individual in the last 3 1/2 years who had eliminated apeneas after weight loss. He is wise enough to know that it may come back, and will be vigilant of the onset of symptoms. Others that reported a cure had not had sleep studies.
Untreated sleep apnea gets worse. Once the proper pressures are found, little change seems to occur.
As O.A.K. mentioned, we gradually adapt to apnea, but after successful treatment, it is a sudden change to have an apnea. I usually don't realize I fell aspleep, until I am "jolted" back awake by an apnea. Your description is accurate. But I think you may not realize that you have indeed fallen asleep.
Phil, I am not happy having sleep apnea (obstructive and central). I hate the machine and being tied to a wall socket (my machine won't run on batteries). Weight loss will not relieve mine. Nor will surgery. I am not fond of the medics, although I have some really good doctors.
But.....My machine has saved my life and returned me to a productive state.
I do not intend on giving up my machine. It has given my too much.
