I completely understand your embarassment at having to sleep on life support, as we hoseheads do. Thank God we can disconnect it during the daytime and go about our other business. However, as with so many things in life, attitude is everything. I was so thrilled to be able to do something to help my own problems, that I look at the CPAP as a lifeline.
Perhaps if you try to adjust your attitude a little, you can come to accept the machine for what it really is...a lifesaver!
A wise person once said that the only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is in the way we approach them. I try to remember this and not get too bogged down in the self-pity that I was once mired in. If I loved someone, then a silly machine could not change the way I felt. I can't help but wonder that if my apnea had been treated years earlier, that my marriage might have had a fighting chance. The apnea made me irritable and intolerant. Trashing a marriage after 31 years is hard to swallow, too. I think we both would have gladly accepted the inconvenience of the CPAP for a good relationship.
Finally, try to get some professional help in adjusting to your illness. That's vital.
Good luck.
