I just came back from South America. In six days, I flew two international flights on American Airlines, one domestic (U.S.) flight on American, three domestic (Argentina) flights on Aerolineas Argentinas, and one domestic flight on Lan Chile (Chile).

The CPAP was not questioned once. My aerosol cans (in a different bag) were confiscated in Chile, which was my last flight prior to returning.

When I met my connecting flight from Miami to return home, they did make a fuss about the number of bags. They were counting not only the CPAP bag, but the bag from the duty-free shop in Santiago (Chile), and the camera that I was "wearing." Before, I could object, they instructed me onrepackaging the bags. With some very clever repackaging, the requirements were satisfied.
