Regarding SDI, perhaps it depends on how lenient your state and his employers are... I'm in CA, home of laws protecting the employees...

From what I've seen (I work in HR), it's really the doctor who has the say. If the dr writes a note saying, "XX can't work from Date to Date," then they are put on short term disability and can apply for SDI. As an employer, I don't think we can even ask what the problem is. Follow up with the employer's HR folks (unless he's self employed) and call the state disability office for more info. Good luck.
