Advice: No OSA, but UARS?

Posted by Jake on December 02, 2002 at 06:19:32:

Hello,

I had posted a few messages over at the 105 Apnea forum. Thanks to all who responded.

To briefly recap: fatigued for the past year. Two different studies revealed both OSA and hypopnea episodes. Prescribed CPAP at 5cm. Felt no difference. Let it go. Got so tired I had to take (and am currently still on) a leave of absence from work. Demanded AutoPAP from doc so I could find out what else may be going on.

Got ResMed Spirit, and felt better than without, but still not 100%. Found out the machine may not be good at detecting UARS (something brought up during my first study, although I did not have the balloon test). Sooo...I went and got the GoodKnight 418P.

Results are interesting. At 5-7 cm. of pressure, I have no apneas or hypopneas, but the machine recorded between 50-60 "flow limitation runs." I assume these are events where I struggle to breathe, and are responsible for my continued fatigue.

Problem is, while the machine recorded them, it didn't respond to them, apparently...I spent two nights on the GK418 and felt absolutely horrible. Back on the ResMed Spirit and doing "ok" again. The obvious thing to do would be to increase the pressure to 9cm. ( a frequent occurence on the Spirit) on the GK and then look at the data and see if it resolves these "runs." Problem is, I only have a passover humidifier for the GK, and REALLY don't want to spend another $200 on a heated unit after I already spent ungodly amounts of money on a new mask, machine, humidifier for the Spirit, etc. May not have a choice, though.

My questions are:

1. Does anyone else have the GK418P, and if so, what do you make of these "runs" it records?

2. I thought the GK was a great machine for UARS, yet it seems the Spirit, purportedly a weaker unit, seems to do a better job responding (if not recording) these events?

Should I just continue to increase pressure on the Spirit until I feel better? SO many variables at work here. It just serves to frustrate me.
