Two weeks Bipap & still struggling

Posted by lauralee on December 03, 2002 at 22:25:12:

I have a Bipap Sulivan VPAP 11 ST, heated HumidAire and two masks; a Mirage FF Series 2 and a Resperonics Pro Lite nasal mask. I like the Pro Lite the best because it doesn't seem so bulky and heavy on my face, but it leaks like crazy. The Mirage FF mask is heavy and hurts the sides of my nose, but leaks less. I have been able to keep them on up to three hours a night before removing them due to the discomfort of the masks and the machine itself. Last week I woke up with pains in my chest and removed the mask and went back to sleep. The next night I discovered a big rip in the hose which caused me to have no pressure at all into my mask. I was able to get the hose replaced the next day.

During these four days of no posting I have been looking through the old posts and have found some references to the main problem I have been having with my BiPap.I was told by my DME that the machine sets itself to your breathing. But this machine seems to start up too soon with the inhalation before I have exhaled completely. Which causes me to inhale quickly again before I am ready to. I feel as if I am running the mile. I usually breath slowly when I am asleep. When I asked if it could be set to wait a second before I inhale the DME says it can't be set and all it has is the RAMP for this problem. From what I've read on this site this expensive machine has many settings that can be adjusted. If not, they should have given me the cheaper model. Between the masks being so uncomfortable and feeling exhausted from the fast pace of the machine I only get about two to three hours benefit from my machine. Anyone have any advice?
