Posted by jman on December 17, 2002 at 20:47:40:I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea (actually they were hypopneas - I don't understand the difference) 2 years ago and at the time I had 40 hypopneas per hour. After I had a UPPP done, it reduced to 12 hypopneas per hour. Unfortunately after that surgery I don't feel any better. I have a dental appliance which is supposed to make it better but even with that AND the surgery I still snore. I am 27 years old and I am an OK weight for my height (I weigh 174 and I am 5'10, so I just need to lose a few more pounds but nothing serious).
My question is this: at what level of apneas or hypopneas are we supposed to feel better? How many is considered a problem and how many per hour is considered OK? After I had a second sleep study done the doctor told me I wasn't at risk for heart problems any more and there was nothing he could do for me. I have just kind of accepted the fact that I am tired and I probably always will be because I haven't felt better after being diagnosed 2 years ago. I am willing to wear a CPAP -- I don't have a problem with the thing -- if it will make me feel better because I am so sick of being tired.
Incidentally, they did test me for narcolepsy but it was ruled out. Are there any other things that can cause excessive daytime sleepiness? What can be done about it when the doctors say there is no more they can do for you? I guess 12 hypopneas per hour is not considered a big deal.
ANY RESPONSES ARE *GREATLY* APPRECIATED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Thank you.
