Posted by - Sleepy Coote on December 17, 2002 at 21:21:07:I've been on a leased CPAP for several weeks now. Definitely sleep much better, but only feel marginally improved. Still plenty of fatigue within two or three hours of waking up in the morning.
Since I wasn't sure about the accuracy of my in-lab titration, and because the air resistance of my allergy-prone nasal passages vary wildly on a regular basis, I thought auto-CPAP would be a good thing to try. If for no other reason, just to have these two options available: 1) monitor my own sleep parameters each night, and 2) occasional, if not continuous, auto-titrations (whichever yielded better results based on ease or difficulty triggering my particular sleep events).
I mentioned the idea to my doctor, who hadn't heard of auto-titrating CPAP. I sent him a fax with a few technical details and medical studies, and he readily approved of the idea. His nurse was out sick that week so I faxed my doctor's prescription to Cigna/Aptiva who promptly denied the request for a change in my therapy. I still await their official letter of denial.
So what gives? What does it take to get a company like Cigna/Aptiva to quit witholding therapy? Any tips???
