If you boil water it kills the germs. That is not the reason they recommended distilled water. Most all tap water contains a great deal of minerals. If you use the humidifier for a short while with tap water you would see an accumulation of a white deposit in your humidifier chamber. It can be cleaned by soaking in vinegar, or you can use distilled water and avoid the deposit entirely.

I buy distilled water for $.58 a gallon at my favorite discount store, and it last about 9 days. No big deal. I have used the same chamber for two years and have never actually 'cleaned' it - it looks like new. I keep it covered when not in use to prevent dust contamination, and have rinsed it with distilled water a few times.
