My understanding is that airway closures are dynamic and variable for most of us with OSA. On fixed CPAP you would constantly run an elevated air pressure required to keep your airway open during the worst-case scenario (or to cover vast majority of your closures). If that really is true then I would think you actually do get more air passing over the membranes during "non-worst-case" scenarios, which probably constitute the majority of time. Effective auto-CPAP, on the other hand, tries to keep air pressures lower during those "non-worst-case" scenarios, and thus you should experience less membrane drying.
