Mouth Breathing? with CPAP

Posted by hosehead on December 18, 2002 at 14:11:57:

I occasionally wake up due to air escaping from my mouth and sometimes my throat is very dry from it. My therapist says I am mouth breathing and a chin strap may help. I think of mouth breathing as someone who breathes in and out through the mouth. In my case, it is air going out only. Normally my tongue prevents air from going through my mouth but when my tongue changes position, air bypasses it.
It seems to me there should be a distinction between "mouth breathing" and "air escape."
I don't see that a chin strap would help because my jaw doesn't open; the air just blows between my teeth and past my lips. If I tape my lips shut then my cheeks will inflate, which doesn't sound too comfortable either.
