I contacted F&P about a month ago on this matter. They said that the reason is to prevent mineral deposits. They even said that no microbe in the water can reach the patient. Despite this, I would not even consider uising subv-potatlbe water in the humidifier. I have used tap water on occaasion, and the only thing that happened is that the chamber got discolored.
