I started CPAP the same time as you. Based on my experience in the lab, I didn't think I could tolerate a mask and asked for pillows. However, my DME said insurance required trying a mask first because it is less expensive. She said she has 95% acceptance with the ResMed Ultra Mirage mask.
And she was right. This mask does not require tightness to get a seal. It has a double cushion; when the air is on, the outer one "inflates" to seal against your face. Look at ResMed's web site where it is pictured and explained.
