I think the fact that your cheeks were expanding is a sign that you were at least trying to mouth breath.

If the Micropore tape isn't working, try the ace bandage again. Keeping the cheeps from expanding helps stop the mouth breathing. The Ace bandage helps keep the cheeks from expanding better than tape, unless your gonna use duct tape, which I would not recommend. I find the 3-inch wide Ace badnage much better than the 2-inch wide bandage. I think it slides out of postition less.
