REM sleep and CPAP

Posted by Gasping for air on January 24, 2003 at 08:37:58:

Hello all,

I have been on CPAP for 2 months now. Before CPAP, I used to recall very vivid dreams. When I started CPAP, I no longer recalled ANY dreams. Then just this week, I have started recalling dreams again.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I always understood that even if you get plenty of REM sleep, you will not recall dreams unless you wake up during or right after a REM period. I can only guess that the reason I was not recalling dreams after CPAP was because I was not waking up repeatedly during the night (my initial sleep study showed 27 awakenings and over 200 obstructive apneas). Does anybody have any other explanations for this?

My main question is why would I now be able to recall dreams now after 2 months on CPAP of not recalling any dreams?

Thank you for reading my post.
