Posted by Nightowl on January 24, 2003 at 15:57:23:After a couple months of CPAP use and almost daily reading of postings on this forum, I have given a lot of thought to reasons why people don't use their CPAPs. Obviously some people just have a rough time adjusting, but a couple other things occurred to me. I have had a preliminary examination with a pulmonolgist who is a sleep specialist,a sleep study, and then a CPAP trial, and have talked to two different respiratory techs who work for the DME I use. Not one of the professionals with whom I've interacted has told me that OAS can be life threatening. My only symptom is daytime sleepiness (not severe compared to some), so I would have no other way of knowing what it can do if I hadn't been educating myself. Also, from the time of my first appointment until I got my CPAP was about three months, and I know lots of people wait much longer. That certainly doesn't give patients the impression that using the machine is urgent. Do you think these things make a difference in compliance? I'd be interested in your opinions.
