I was one of those people who didn't think it was such a big deal----much earlier in the process, however. My internist, who ordered my sleep study, actually came right out and told me sleep apnea was a very big health risk, especially in light of my cardiovascular and GERD symptoms. Apparently his words just didn't sink in, though. I reluctantly scheduled that sleep test, but was *very* happy the first available appointment was a good three months off. As very bad luck would have it, my father passed away the week I was to have my first sleep study. A necessary reschedule meant yet two more months of waiting for my first sleep study. Then a couple more months of waiting after that study for a follow up titration study. I was, at the time, very happy to put off my sleep studies, as I was reluctant to do them in the first place. Ironically my health and cognitive skills were deteriorating all the while, and I couldn't even attribute it to my likely sleep disorder----despite my internist's warning that this sleep apnea was a very big deal. In retrospect I wonder how much of my complacence was due to ignorance about apnea and how much was due to incoherent thinking on my part.
Oh, how I wish I had read Dr. Dement's book right from the start! I would have kicked and screamed about waiting so long for my two sleep studies. My cognitive functions definitely deteriorated significantly during those eight months between my internist ordering a sleep study and my finally receiving a CPAP. I am still waiting to see how much of my diminished cognitive functionality returns----so far it's a very slow return.
