Can I throw in my 2 cents worth?
Melatonin is difficult to dose and time. It's a hormone. It works on systems in the body to make it think it's night. The people that sell it think it's great, but I've read that it can tend to make depression a little worse. Which kind of makes sense if you've heard of SAD.
What is your goal? sleeping aid? or calming agent? There are probably other things that can do the job that don't carry as much baggage.
If you want to kick-start his brain's activity and hormone and neurotransmitter production, look into, and then run by his doctor, these things: 5-htp (may help production of serotonin), Vinpocetine (may help increase vascular blood flow and improve aerobic respiration during hypoxia), Acetyl-L-carnitine (may be precursor to acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter for thinking and nerve growth factor, but use caution with epileptics), Phosphytidal Serine (may lead to healthier neuron membranes and better transmission of brain signals).
Good luck.
