It is generally thought that awakening at least slightly from a dream is required to remember it but this is not universally accepted.

Although REM-sleep is often viewed as a 'stage' of sleep, it really is not but is more properly viewed as a totally separate state with totally separate on/off neural switches. Remsleep, nonremsleep, wakefulness and vigilance are all separately evolved states of being that compete with each other and have separate neural activation pathways.
