Whew! Comapred to your situation, my frustrating experiences with Mike's doctors sounds like a walk in the park, and I did not consider it normal at all. I began petitioning Mike's neurologist for a sleep study in July, but because Mike is on county hospital aid, it took until late-October to get funding for his sleep test. He was finally tested on Nov. 10. The lab got the results to his neurologist on Dec. 10. His neurologist finally called me with the results on Dec. 19 and told me he would send orders to the RT department of the hospital to get in touch with me to set up his CPAP. Next, Social Services at the hospital called the following week to let me know that the hospital doesn't cover DME and that we were on our own with it. I asked her to send me a copy of the prescription and the sleep study, and I would have a hand-me-down machine set up for Mike. Social Services sent a copy of both to me and to the original supplier of the hand-me-down machine so they coud set it up for him. Had I waited and had to find some way to acquire a machine, I would probably still be waiting. So, all in all, it took about six months from the time I first noticed the apnea, to the time he started getting therapy, and it would have been considerably longer than that if I had been 'patient' and waited for the system to handle it. I'm sure you'll hear many stories about the time it takes - Mike's is just one of many stories out there. I do think, though, that it is obscene to make a patient wait months and years(!!!!!!!) for treatment. What is the likelihood of just going out of your area to get some of this taken care of? That just seems plain WRONG for you to have to wait so long! If you are willing to travel, please let us know and I'm sure I (and several others here) can come up with the names of a couple of places that may be able to get you in sooner than a year for a sleep study. Where are you, BTW?
