Jay,
Renting at first is a good idea. Most insurance companies will opt for a 6 month or so rental period (to see if you're gonna stick with the treatment) and then offer to purchase.

One word of caution: make sure you know exactly how much of the CPAP costs your insurance company is going to pay. My insurance company only pays for 80% of the monthly rental after I meet my yearly deductible. The company who provides you with your CPAP will file all of the paperwork, but sometimes they will not tell you the whole story. When I first got my CPAP I received no bill for 6 months. Then suddenly I got a bill for over $500.00! It seems that the $80 plus in monthly rental fees had just being going twoards my deductible. The CPAP rental company just let the bills pile up and then dumped them on me all at once.

Be careful...and ask a lot of questions!
