I assume you were using two machines: one for the fixed 10cm CPAP and another for the Auto-pap experiment. If that's true, could it be that your fixed rate machine needs to be calibrated, or that maybe the two machines don't agree on what consitutes 10 cm? Just because the dial says a machine is delivering 10cm of pressure doesn't guarantee accuracy. My lab setting was 10 cm, but after dealing with aerophagia and chest discomfort, it was lowered to 9 and I slept better and felt much, much better in the mornings. One centimeter seems like a very small increment, but it worked wonders for me. A centimeter here or there could be the cause of your experiences.
