I think your rhetorical question is a good one. Yes, indeed, my lungs feel over-inflated while awake at 10 cm pressure. I don't need 10 cm while awake for lack of obstructive sleep events---hence the over pressure. But if I don't need 10 cm pressure while sleeping, for lack of sleep events, then I would assume my lungs are over inflated then too. Over inflated much more often for someone like me with a low AHI versus someone with a high AHI. Right? And wouldn't it be lung over inflation that is either prolonged or collectively adds up to a significant sum of time that would trigger the hering-breuer reflex?
