I think I fit into your first, more elaborate theory better. Here's my sequence:

CPAP usage first = dream over-awareness the entire time

Auto-Pap usage second = normal dreaming awareness from what I remember very long ago (kind of like riding a bike after not doing so for decades --- re-famailiarity is almost instant)

CPAP usage third = dream over awareness once again

Auto-Pap usage fourth = normal dreaming awareness once again
