You should be able to breath with the mask on without any power. Most have a safety valve or something like it just in case of a loss of power. So I would recommend when you get in bed and get all hooked up, before you go to sleep turn off the machine and see what it is like to breath. You should be able to breath.

Your body will wake you up if you can't breath for a certain length of time, just like it did when you experienced OSA before treatment. Now you may not wake up and notice, just as before, but if you can't breath, due to the mask, you would wake up and know it and that shouldn't happen.

So give it a test before going to sleep and if you can't breath when the machine is off contact your DME or the sleep lab and find out why.

If you tape your mouth shut I would look for another method. Not only does it create a problem if you need to breath through your mouth for any reason, you would have a really bad problem if you were to get sick and heave. Where would it go?
