Insomnia and Sleep Apnea in Teens

Posted by Concerned Mom on March 18, 2003 at 11:14:04:

My daughter has enlarged adenoids and tonsils. She underwent a sleep test, her apnea index was 4.6 and her arousal index was 16.5. She reached all stages of sleep, but her REM period was minimal. Her oxygen saturation was 92 to 95%.

She has snored like an old man since the day she was born and the sleep test noted severe snoring. She began complaining about being tired all the time in the 5th grade.

She's now 15 and we just learned about sleep disorders. Since 5th grade she's gained a great deal of weight -she now weighs 244 pounds, she been diagnosed with depression, and her personality has changed, she's irritable and irritating, but all this started 5 years ago when she was still normal weight.

Her nasal pressure monitor fell off of her during the night. It wasn't on her nose when she woke up in the morning. Might that effect the results?

Her ENT says her arousals were not due to obstruction and that she should be treated for insomnia. Her pediatrician prescribed a sedative that I'm afraid to give her because maybe she has to wake up to breath.

Does she have apnea? What else could be causing her symptoms?
