Surgery for sleep apnoea- usually removal of the tonsils and adenoids has been shown to be an effective treatment for OSA in children. It has extremely mixed results in adults and is thought to be generally ineffective. Teenagers are stuck in the middle- the're not kids but the're not exactly adults either. Quite which literature to apply leaves this in a grey zone I would think (I'm not aware of this being tested in teenagers- but somebody else might be).
Tonsillectomies used to be very common as they were thought to be a source of systemic infection. As I understand it this has since been shown to be a false assumption- as such there is no good reason for most people to have this operation anymore. Also Tonsils can grow back sometimes.
