The trouble in my case was I had no mask choices. I had no knowledge base at all. For the CPAP PSG the mask was so tight it hurt. If I got a leak the guy came in and tightened the “screw” another turn or two. The process was rough to say the least. It took the whole next day for the mark to clear where I had a leak. Plus the stupid forehead mark from the mask cushion.

Don’t expect to get a good nights sleep on your titration study. With all the wires, the mask, a strange environment, noise from the machine and just thinking about what’s going on, who could sleep? It’s really not all that bad. I’ve had three and the last one was almost enjoyable because I had my own mask (3rd one) and I knew what to expect. After the overnight portion on the third study I had a MSLT during the daytime. Still wired up, still wearing my mask and it was like a vacation. What a relaxing day. Every two hours I had to take a 20-minute nap. I loved it. No work, no kids, and no other responsibilities or duties for 8 hours. Just a book, the TV and naps. WOW! I’d do that one again right now wires and all.

What I’m trying to get across is it may be uncomfortable but it’s not so bad. Even if you only feel like you slept a few minutes they will get some good data. Ask about mask choices with your doctor and the sleep center before the study. You may have a choice. With the nasal pillow type leaks are not an issue and you can get it sized right during the study. Please consult with you doctor about the sleeping aid too. Meds cloud the issue when interpreting the results.

You may not get it right the first time but you have the advantage of learning here. It’s going to be strange sleeping with something attached to you head but you’ll get used to it. And from then on you can refer to yourself as a Hosehead. How can you lose? You’ll be in good company.
