I have a heated humidifier but only use a few weeks out of the year when it is the coldest outside and very dry in the house. I do not experience sore throats or congestion with straight air during most of the year. On the contrary, using it at any other time leaves me with a groggy feeling in the morning.

So, I'm glad that it helps you but your advice to
NEVER forget to turn on the heat does not apply to some poeple. How can this be?...LOL
