Posted by Rick Sleepbeder on March 19, 2003 at 09:31:59:I believe I have had Sleep Apnea since at least 1990. I have recently been diagnosed and started CPAP this past January. I have been slightly overweight in my 30's (normal middle-age gut). Since my treatment of OSA it seems I am more energetic, I am loosing weight (lost 25lbs since Jan), I feel better about many things.
My question is; can OSA, untreated, cause extreme fatigue? To the point where doing a run is impossible? My last PRT (Physical Readiness Test) in the Navy (before OSA treatment), I failed the run. I just couldn't do it. I was exhausted only after about 8 minutes. The muscles in my legs hurt badly too. I realize that I was not in the best of shape and all, but that was the first time in my 17 year Naval career that I felt that way and I could not even finish the run. I usually could always squeeze by at least. I am about to write a letter to my Commanding Officer and explain to him why I failed the run and I just want to be sure OSA could have contributed to this. I am not looking for excuses, but if OSA could have been a factor then I think it is only fair that I mention it. Either way, I am now in much better shape and I know that the PRT will be different next time. Thanks
