INSURANCE FOR CPAP MGMT

Posted by CABBIT57 on March 19, 2003 at 14:36:11:

WOW!!! I stumbled in here today while doing some research and I feel like I'm home! I've used my CPAP since 1/02. I have OSA and Alpha Intrusion. I only know about the AI because I worked for a neurologist in 1999. We had a sleep lab and I volunteered to be the "dummy" for a study to launch and calibrate the new software for the sleep equipement. In the morning, the tech woke me by saying "boy, you've got some real problems." I ignored the issue and it became critical. I've been through several clueless physicians and 4 masks. I'm angry about the lack of decision making power I have in this.
My question: I'was told that United Healthcare would cover my CPAP up to the purchase price of the machine. That was reached in 1/03. What happens now? Is it mine? Do I get paperwork to that effect? Do I need to deal with the DME company forever? HOW DOES THIS WORK???? I can't seem to get a straight answer from UHC. To complicate things, I am on COBRA with them and about to switch to a different insurance carrier with my new employer. How does that work? I only used Apria because they were the only company in network with UHC. I want to get another mask and I'm looking hard at the "something Aire". (I remembered this 20 mins ago)If ins will cover it, goody. If not, I'll buy it myself. WHY??? do we have to have a prescription for the other non-machine items? Ok, I'm sorry everyone I'm ranting. I've felt so alone dealing with this. I found you guys today and now I have alot of questions, but not now.
I will appreciate all of your experience and wisdom.
