REM only apnea? Yes, it is very common. That is one of the most common reasons we cannot do "split-night " sleep studies on all patients. A "split-night" study is done to try to diagnose sleep apnea in the first few hours of the night, then apply CPAP and get it adjusted to the best treatment pressure during the remaining hours of the sleep study.
If the patient has apnea only in REM (common) , then we may not be able to establish how much apnea they have until we see lots of REM sleep (late in the night).
